In a report from Deadline, the Just Cause movie has its director and writer. Mike Dowse (Stuber) will direct, and Derek Kolstad (John Wick trilogy) will pen the script for the adaption. Constantin Film’s Robert Kulzer, Prime Universe Film’s Adrian Askarieh, and Kolstad will produce the film.
Drawing inspiration from the real U.S. invasion of Panama, code-named “Operation Just Cause,” the film will follow the series protagonist Rico Rodriguez in stopping The Black Hand, a dangerous mercenary group. Rico will be accompanied by a female co-star who will act as a romantic interest for the hero.
Dowse has had experience with over the top action that you would expect from Just Cause. His most recent film is this year’s Coffee & Kareem, an action-comedy that starred Ed Helms (The Office, The Hangover) and Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures). The director also led 2019’s action-comedy Stuber with Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Silicon Valley) and Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy).
Kolstad has made a career off of writing one of the most successful action franchises in recent years, John Wick. Keanu Reeves, in the role of the assassin in black, has not only has killed many people across the three films, but the trilogy has also raked in over $580 million, according to Box Office Mojo. The writer is currently working on the fourth John Wick film along with its TV adaption, The Continental. He is also working on the Hitman TV adaption.
The Just Cause games have all been developed by Avalanche Studios. The first title released in 2006 with the fourth and latest installment launched in 2018. Last year the game concluded with its final DLC, Danger Rising.
We don’t have word yet on who will play Rico or the female lead in the Just Cause movie, so let us know who you would like to star in the film in the comments.
